Engine Rattling Sound at idle When starting up Cold

Hey Scotty! I'm currently hearing a rattling sound that seems to be coming from inside the engine (it sounds like it is coming from the timing chain or something) on my 2002 Camry 2.4L LE with 215,000 miles.

It only comes up when I start the engine up cold and then its idling, but goes away after driving a few miles.

I did follow your advice and removed the serpentine belt and ran the engine for a few minutes to see if it was one of the pulleys, but unfortunately, it's not, and it's still making the rattling sound with the belt off.

I included a Youtube link video with the sound so you can hear it: https://youtube.com/shorts/FVfvclTsyfc?feature=share

I'm gonna follow your advice on that video with the same Camry you did last year in the following link to do an engine carbon cleaning on my next oil change to see if the sound goes away: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7WwSl46tL8&list=LL&index=7&t=450s

Any more checks I should do?

Please let me know,

Thanks!

Check the timing chain tensioner.

@chucktobias The timing chain tensioner seems likely. The video below shows a rattling timing chain on a 2.4L Camery. When he revs up the engine 😉 the chain rattling stops.

@chucktobias Thank you, Chuck! I will try and replace this to see if the rattling will stop.
