Hi all,
my 2015 Sportage needs a replacement engine (Euro6) after breaking down on the motorway. Water pump bearings went (apparently quite common with the Gamma II engines) which caused the drive train to shear off and the engine to overheat. Took it to garage and they advised there’s no compression at all, car not even turning over when I try to start it. So a new/replacement engine is needed. Thought this would be a simple task, but it’s turning out to be an absolute minefield. There’s nowhere to buy a new engine from either Kia or Hyundai. Closest would be to buy one produced in China, but am sceptical of that route. Have looked into sourcing a Remanufactured or Reconditioned engine and not found a suitable option. So looking at buying one from a reputable salvage yard and this is where I need some help.
My engine is a 1.6L petrol 135BHP /99Kw Euro 6 engine - part number G4FD.
Question) Can I buy and drop in any other G4FD engine into my car? EG from a mark4/2016 Sportage or Hyundai Tucson? What if the donor engine has a different BHP, say 130bhp? Or it’s a Euro 5 engine? What considerations are there that need to be taken into account? ECU tune up? Different ancillaries? Or do I need an exact model and power output engine? Any help much appreciated.
With a modern car there are so many variations from year to year and model to model you really would need the exact same engine - and you could wind up with the same problem. Frankly you'd probably be better off replacing the car, preferably with a more reliable model.
@chucktobias thanks for your reply. Unfortunately simply getting a new car isn’t an option. In terms of what failed on the original engine, we know what caused the issue.
You mention lots of variations, could you elaborate please? My plan would be to get a G4FD engine and strip it down to a bare engine and then add all the ancillaries from the original engine onto the donor engine. Would this be feasible? TIA
You would have to research the variations between the model the engine came from and your car. There might even be physical differences in transmission mounting and engine mounts, let alone sensor differences and internal engine changes.
Scotty always advises AGAINST swapping engines from different vehicles because the software will be different.
