I’ve got a 2005 F-150 with the 5.4 3v engine. I’ve recently gotten P0022, P0345, and Misfire codes. The engine shakes at idle and the timing chain makes noticeable noise when driving. The auto shop says a timing kit may not fix this completely and suggests that I put a remanufactured engine in. What do you think?
The 5.4 3 valve is widely regarded as one of the worst engines ever. Replacing it is almost always the route.
How many miles? Sounds like the timing chain is stretched and retarded the ignition timing. Why in the world would you need a new engine just to replace the timing chains? The real test to see if you need a new engine is a dry/wet compression test, not just a sales pitch.
It’s got 147,000 miles
The person I talked to seemed to think a timing kit wouldn’t fix the problem completely
Talk to somebody else.
