Anyone have any experience towing with an F150 ecoboost 2.7 or 3.5? Good? Bad? Not recommend?
I don’t tow all the time but I do occasionally maybe once a month or so. I also use 4x4 for I live in snowy areas. Thanks
Clarification: How much will you be towing? Also adding @USAFdozerpilot to the discussion
Small fishing boat, a project car i.e. camaro, mustang, old tacoma, when I move my job requires me to move around the country a little so maybe a 10foot trailer or 16foot.
I personally wouldn't take the F-150 with the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 unless I just wanted to drive a truck and not use it for truck things, like towing. That engine's 0.3L smaller than the 3.0L V6 in my compact Ford Ranger, and they put it in a full size truck. The only reason it can pull like it does is because they slapped the turbocharger and GDI on there, and that'll wear out the tiny engine before it should. I'd avoid EcoBoost trucks in general because of that and look at the 3.3L naturally aspirated V6 or the 5.0 V8. There's way less stuff to break and you don't need to worry about carbon buildup on valves, which I'm pretty sure is still an issue on EcoBoost engines.
Also avoid the newer models with the GM-Ford joint 10 speed automatic transmission and get an older 6 speed if you can find one. The 10 speeds are having issues.
The Ecoboosts will tow, with that being said it does hell to those motors. The ecos chew through spark plugs and you also are dealing with a small motors with turbos.
Small engines with turbos is just a bad excuse for not using the proper sized engine to begin with.
