Fix 99' Buick LeSabre?

Hi Scotty,

Just graduated from college and I need a cheap used car and I think I found a good one!

It's my neighbor's 99' Buick LeSabre with 77,000 miles on it. It used to be my neighbor's grandfather's (who only drove it around town) and my neighbor put 10,000 miles on it.

Car looks great (no rust my neighbor tells me) but an "incident" a year ago rendered the car inoperable. I don't know exactly what happened, but my neighbor says there was a coolant leak and the engine got super hot before the car stopped working. My neighbor says the hoses and head gaskets look okay but it needs to be towed to local mechanic to be professionally examined.

What do you think the problem is? If this car is worthy enough to be fixed, do you think it can be my daily driver (about 30 miles daily) and it can occasionally be used from San Francisco to Los Angeles? I really like this car because it isn't overloaded with technology and it is SUPER comfortable.

Thanks for your time,

Nick

If the engine was severely overheated there is a good chance it will need to be replaced, the cost of which will would be more than a 23-year-old Buick is worth.

Super hot, as you describe it could mean blown head gaskets and warped heads and block.  If this is the case, it's not worth it.
