Flickering dashboard lights for a while, now car won't start.

Hi,

I have a Toyota Aygo 05 with 65,000 miles on the clock. I was driving it and the power steering warning light started flickering. I ignored it and continued driving. The Anti-braking system light and handbrake lights started flickering as well. A while later I was driving it again and suddenly the battery light and engine warning light came on and the car came to a full stop. I got out the car and came back around 2 hours later. The engine started fine but the three dashboard lights were still flickering. A couple of days ago I was reversing out of my driveway and again the battery light and engine warning light came on and the engine went off. When I tried to start the engine again, the engine warning light came on and a few of the dashboard lights flickered but the engine did not start. I tested the battery and it is showing 12.5V so it's certainly ok and when I turn the key to the accessory position, I can turn on the headlights and the radio. When I plug in the code scanner with the key in the on position, all the dashboard lights come on fully and no OBDII codes are found. Please advise.

Many thanks.

How old is the battery? The fact that it shows 12.5 volt, does not necessariliy means your battery is good. Load test the battery and alternator to find out.

When the engine still turned on, I tested the battery and alternator while loading it and both showed correct figures.

You may have connection issues. Check all the wirings (including grounds) to the alternator.

Done that as well. Do you think it could be an ignition issue?

It could be.

Is there a way to test it? Does it make sense that the engine warning light comes on?

How old is the battery?

Is your power steering electric or hydraulic? If it’s electric, I too suspect the battery/alternator/wiring like @yaser

Is your drive belt new (relatively)?

Does the CEL turn on after the engine has died/stalled? Or while the engine is still running normally?

No idea how old the battery is but accessories in the car like the radio and lights turn on when the key is in the accessory position so don't think that is an issue.

I do not know about the power steering and the drive belt is not new.

The engine does not turn on so I do not know if the CEL is on when the engine is.

Isn’t there any manufacturing date mentioned on the battery? When you try to start the car, does it crank? Can you hear the starter engaging? Or is there only silence when you turn the key?

There is only a slight click from behind the steering wheel when I turn the key, the CEL comes on but nothing else.

Done that already.

Does it crank if you jump start the battery? Does the starter engage if you Hotwire it?

No, nothing at all. Only the electronics (lights, radio, a/c) work.

Watch the video I linked above & test all your wiring & fuses.

Where can I find the fuses?

Any specific fuses to be looking at?

Fuse 12 & relay R2. If you’re not confident about what you’re looking for, it’s best you took it to your trusted mechanic and have them diagnose it.
