Scotty , Please help! I have a 2000 Ford Crown Vic P71 Police package with a 4.6L V8 and the 4R70W Automatic Trans.....The transmission is rebuilt and has 60000 miles on it now....I have serviced the trans every 20000 miles dropping the pan, and using the correct fluid and filter. The problem, the overdrive light started flashing recently. Only when the tranny is good and hot and I am stuck in stop and go traffic (about 15-20mph) or while sitting in traffic for a short period of time (2 minutes) while the vehicle is in drive. Once moving again the car with stay in limp mode for about 30 seconds (slow acceleration/ no power) until it get over 40mph, then the light goes out and the car is fine. I have replaced all three shift solenoids sensors (inside the pan on the bottom of the valve body). I replaced the vehicle speed sensor, as well as the output shaft speed sensor....the fluid is pink and I have never found any metal in the pan. The vehicle shifts fine and runs well...The engine was also replaced and has the same mileage as the trans (60000)..... I served in the US Army as a mechanic and my father had a shop that I worked in as a kid so I am pretty decent a fixing things....but I give up?? I took it to my local mechanic and he couldn't figure it out....again it doesn't seem to slip at all and seem to be shifting fine....any ideas??? Thank you for your help!

Answer to the Trans blink O/D light. It turned out it was a bad torque converter. It never slipped so you could feel it. It started making noise one day I stopped driving it immediately, but it was too late the metal had gone through the trans. It gave no signs or warning other than the light blinking when hot and stuck in traffic. So, beware. I had to replace the trans......

Thank you for posting back with the diagnosis & fix. Much appreciated.

If you've done all that already might as well just find a small transmission cooler kit. I've looked into one for a track car that I'm trying to build and they get super hot as well. If everything else is running fine with car I think a trans oil cooler could be a way around this just take care when you install it because if you run out of trans fluid or pressure builds up in the transmission it can easily blow it up. Otherwise there's not many other options that I can think of at least.
