Scotty and moderators, I'm looking to have a myth busted. does using 93 octane on a car that runs on 87 regular octane substitute as a fuel system cleaner? I'm looking to order ATS cleaner but am curious in the meantime while I wait for it to arrive.

No. Not at all.

No. Using Shell V-Power may help clean things out a little bit, but most of that is just advertising gimmicks. BP has Envigorate, etc. Nobody really knows what's actually in them. Top Tier branded fuels allegedly add more than EPA required amounts of cleaners, but they're not added in quantities that would clean things out like Scotty would, either with professional fuel injector cleaning equipment, or his favorite fuel tank additive. I can never remember what that is.

I agree. And as far as I know, the additives would be the same in the 87 octane as in the higher grades

No. Octane does nothing to clean a fuel system.

There is a type of fuel out there they may potentially help clean the system: detergent fuel. Specifically Top Tier gas. Many big name gas stations meet the criteria for Top Tier gas: Shell, Chevron, and even Costco. Go to the Top Tier Gas website: https://toptiergas.com/licensed-brands/  to see which brands use it. I usually opt for Costco, because they are cheap and good. If I can't get Costco, my next preference are clean and well kept gas stations that have top tier gas.
