According to the owner's manual, the fuel filter is considered lifetime and regular maintenance or replacement is not needed. Is there anything wrong with this system and, if any, preventive maintenance actions to take as necessary?

preventive maintenance actions to take

If the filter is part of pump like I think it is, then yes it's a "lifetime" filter. (meaning the lifetime of the pump).

Basically you keep driving the car and wait until the pump fails (usually) or the filter plugs up (rarely).

Then you drop the tank and replace the whole assembly which is a horrible job if you do it yourself, or expensive if you get it done. But if you're lucky, you'll never need to. I haven't had to do one yet.

There is no such thing as a lifetime filter.  Ford is lying.  It's on top of the fuels tank, about $15 at AutoZone and everywhere.

I looked on Rockauto and they do not list any external fuel filter.
The fuel pump assembly has integral filtration.

nothing on the part diagram either

If you're thinking of the FG-1114 then I think that's just an aftermarket addon.

You're probably right @mmj. AutoZone and others have the external filter listed for the model and information given.  Good catch!

separate filters seem to be pretty rare these days. I guess the fuel has gotten cleaner.

HA!

I don't doubt it. Standards have gone up. Plastic tanks don't rust and stay pretty clean. As I've mentioned I've never had a change a pump. And I run them right down past the 'E' like they say you shouldn't do.
