Garage won't let me provide oil for oil change

Hi Scotty, love your show, I've learned so much, thanks! I have a 2018 Alfa Romeo and I took it in for annual maintenance. I noticed they charged me $75 for mobile 1 synthetic oil for my oil change. I asked them if I can provide the oil to save money and they said "we are not allowed to install customer provided parts." What do you think I should do?

it seems your options are:

  • use the shop's oil
  • go to another shop

Another option - Do it yourself.

Some shops have that as a general rule since they have to guarantee their work. (This can be a problem with parts they don't provide.) Of course they also mark parts up and so make less money on the job if you bring your own.

That's an excellent price for a full synthetic oil change. I doubt you'll find any place that does it cheaper, especially with Mobil 1.

Only cheaper option would be to do it yourself.

That's not a bad price. Some shops charge over $100 for full synthetic.

Oil change prices are getting crazy.  I remember when they were $20 bucks for the entire job, parts and labor! Heck, some guys probably remember even cheaper. That’s inflation.

I remember

The cost for the whole service was $243, it did include a road test, but that's seems to be really high.

A jug of oil + filter = ~$40 plus an hour of your time. It starts to sound more attractive right?

Where did you go? What kind of shop is it? That is insane. That’s more than a BMW Oil Change AT THE DEALER!!!

I went to BA auto in Columbia MD. It is a high cost of living area, but still.....
