2018 Jeep Renegade 4door sport utility with about 36k miles, for the last couple months when pumping gas at the station the gas pump at the station does not automatically stop and gas starts to spill out of the tank until I manually turn off the lever on the gas handle. Cannot walk away or risk gas keeping spill out until I return to the pump and turn it off myself. Any ideas?
That's a problem with the pump, not your Jeep. They didn't calibrate the venturi in the nozzle correctly. Had this happen a few times and I feel like Jeff Daniels in Dumb and Dumber when it happens. Haha. Unless the EVAP system isn't letting the air vent out of the tank through the canister as it fills. You would likely get a CEL for that. Try another station.
Thanks Justin,
It's my daughters Jeep there is the chance the pump shut off but then allowed gas to spill out right after shutting off. I asked her to try another station on the next fill up and to pay attention. If the pump shuts off and allows gas to spill back out do you happen to know what might cause that?
The sensor not shutting the pump off in time usually causes that. It's gas that's still in the nozzle that doesn't have anywhere to go until the nozzle gets pulled out. The pump will usually shut off if raw gas gets into the sensor, which is probably what's happening. I'd suggest keeping an eye on how much gas goes in compared to how empty it is. If it's a 20 gallon tank and a quarter full, start paying attention as it gets toward 15 gallons on the screen. Also listening to the process as it goes on. Usually you can hear the filling noise will sound more muffled and raise in pitch as it gets close to being full. Kinda like filling up a water bottle or a watering can for flowers.
Thank you for your reply.
No problem! 🙂
