Giving someone a jump start

Hi Scotty,

Is it safe and ok for my vehicle, 2009 Toyota Sienna 2 wheel drive, to give a stranded motorist a jumpstart? My wife was driving and saw a young man whose battery died and stopped to assist. She gave him her jumper cables and he did the rest.

The electrical systems of modern cars are so sensitive that I'd be afraid to jump start directly from car to car even if the connections are made correctly. I carry a lithium-ion jump starter instead.

This is what I carry. I don't carry jumper cables anymore.

This is pretty dangerous because if you or the other person doesn't hook up the cables properly, severe and expensive damage can occur.

Yes, as long as you connect the polarity correctly.
