Hey Scotty, i need a ride with more space than my 2005 Mercedes E500 wagon. I'm thinking about getting a good old american SUV and have my eyes set on 2 SUVs. First one is a 1997 Ford Expedition 5.4 XLT with 150000 miles in very good condition for it's age and milage but the transmission doesn't shift from 3rd to 4th gear (the other gears do great, no slippage or anything like that). Do you think it's a big problem to solve this issue, like overhauling the whole transmission? Or something less expensive like changing the solenoids or something like that? Second one is a 1997 GMC Suburban K2500 7.4 (454 SS) with 168000 miles...engine, transmission and 4WD are doing great and also has a LPG system which does great, but it has rust on the rear end and front left axle which would need work to be done. Both ask around 4000$ (which is cheap for american suvs in germany). Which one would you suggest and what do you think about the transmission problem? Would love to hear your expert advise.
P.S.: I know that these are old cars and will have work to be done at some point in time, but that's not an issue. I love old cars, they are just built better and are easier to fix than these driving computers nowadays. I had a few cars in my life and i always do the work on my own, also overhauled the complete engine of my (european) Ford Capri 2.8 which i have sold to get my Ford Escort Cosworth 4x4 in almost rally trim, the only problem is i never had an issue with an automatic transmission before so i don't have the knowledge to tell if this is something worse or just a minor issue. Would be great if you could share your knowledge with me. Thank you a lot and keep the good work up. I love your videos and how you just say what you are thinking.
Best regards from germany
Nico
I wouldn't recommend either, but if you want one of the two, I'd go with the Suburban. They were building tanks back then. Of course, you need to immediately handle any rust and other issues.
