Gunk Flecks Caking Engine Bay

Pontiac Bonneville 2000 SSEi

Automatic

OBDII P0440

I was looking through my engine bay today and noticed a buildup of green/gray/brown little specks of gunk that cake the side and bottom of the driver’s side lower-back engine bay.

Any thoughts on what this substance may be and what part of the engine is spitting it out?

Could be a lot of things. You need to post a photo.

that looks like the CV axle boot down below. It's probably cracked and slinging grease everywhere.

Thanks a million.

I am supposed to drive 4.5hrs across Florida later today.

Do you think it would be unsafe to so so before getting this fixed?

as long as it doesn't vibrate or make noise you should be fine. If the boot only just broke, you might well get another year out of the axle before it needs to be replaced.

But if I were you I would jack up the car and inspect everything just to make sure. Or take it to a trusted mechanic if you're not comfortable.

Two separate shots of the buildup here:

Given the green tint, I’m thinking something with the coolant system. Seems to be spraying in little flecks all over that corner of the bay. I can’t tell from where—I’d need to get underneath the vehicle.
