I saw somewhere that it takes about 20 minutes of driving for the alternator to recharge all the electricity lost from starting the car. I only drive in 10-15 minute segments because of how close work and school are. Am I draining my battery by doing this?
No.
It starts charging seconds after start up. To fully charge, it can takes around 10 minutes driving. 15 minutes if mostly at idle. That's only if your battery and alternator are in good shape.
Okay, thank you. It’s brand new (500 miles) so they definitely are in good shape.
It depends.
Nice, warm summer days and you will probably be ok.
Cold, dark, winter mornings, with headlights, wipers, heated seats, rear screen demist etc all running and your battery will soon fly the white flag.
I have a smart charger for my Jeep. I use it periodically in winter to keep the battery topped off.
Thanks!
it takes about 20 minutes
I'd say it's closer to 5 minutes or less.
It's easy to figure out using a bit of math.
Am I draining my battery
You would know. Battery voltage would be low and you'd have trouble starting
Got it. Thanks!
