Car:   2003 Holden Rodeo Ra Tfs77 4jh1-tc 3.0l.  493,000 km

Problem: high coolant pressure and overheating.

So the engine was just rebuild less than 1000km ago and it began overheating on hills, upon investigation i have found high pressure in the coolant and gas bubbling out off the radiator, I took off the cylinder head, the head gasket seemed to be fine, no visual damage on the steel, so i presumed a warped head so I got it machined and put it back together, but the issue remains. My question is: could the head be cracked inside where you can't see it, or could the head gasket still be bad even if it looks fine or even could the turbo be bad? I am completely stumped, there is no coolant in the oil, and no smoke in exhaust, just gas in the coolant overflowing the overflow tank. (radiator cap is new).

Thanks for your help.

Yes the head or the block could be cracked. That's why when professionals do head gaskets they check the heads with magnaflux. Odds are that's a problem. There's crack somewhere

I had the same problem and discovered very fine cracks in the block between the water jackets and the cylinder.

Would the crack go through the cylinder liner? so would i be able to visually check for cracks in the engine cylinder?

The cracks in my block were on the top of the block between the water jacket and the cylinder liner.  It wasn't in the cylinder itself but did connect the water passage and the cylinder rim compromising the head gasket.  I had to get a used short block and rebuild it.  My block was cast iron.

Thanks, ill pull the head off again to check, but I'm fairly sure there was no cracks on the engine block, but i was wondering if there could be a crack in the head which isn't visible from just looking at the surface.

Of course, that's why they make the Magnaflux process and crack isolation fluid.  Check Youtube for many videos on crack isolation techniques and processes.  Hopefully, your head is cracked and can be replaced with a rebuilt unit, using a good quality MLS gasket and ARP studs.

I'm looking at images and i can see what looks like exhaust gasses going over the gasket entirely i'll try to attach an image, but i don't think it'll work
