High Idle

Topic starter

I have a 1998 Ford Ranger 4.0 V6 226,000 miles with an engine replacement at 190,000 miles due to compression issues. The truck will have an elevated idle from time to time. It usually happens at a stoplight or sign. Normal idle is around 800 rpm but it will be above 2,000 rpms at these times. I'm not sure where to even begin to diagnosis the problem.

Was the replaced engine brand new or rebuilt or used from a junkyard?

Rebuilt.

Well sounds like a throttle sticking to me I could easily just be a worn out throttle cable that thing's old enough I assume it still has the throttle cable and not electronic being a 1998

It has the throttle cable.

I ordered the part today and will keep you posted. 🙂
