I have a Taurus wagon that sat for about 6 months and then was used again. The idle was fine, and then I cleaned the throttle body with carbuerator cleaner from Walmart. Now, when I start the car with a cold engine, it revs us to 2500 RPM and then quickly drops to 1500 RPM. It stays there for about 2-3 minutes and then drops to 1100 RPM and then, when I push on the brake pedal it lowers to 1050 RPM, at which time I put the engine in gear. The idle is normal when the car is warm. I did not wipe out the throttle body with a towel when I sprayed it, and I also sprayed the IAC at that time. I have also replaced the intake air filter two weeks ago. My MPG is also down about 6 MPG after cleaning the throttle body and IAC.
Any suggestions?
The spray cleaning may have damaged the IAC module or the throttle position sensor (TPS) or both. My suggestion is to replace them.
You should have used throttle body cleaner and not carburetor cleaner to spray those down. Carburetor cleaner leaves a thin oily residue on whatever you spray it on. Spray some on your hand; it'll feel slightly greasy afterward. That leftover oil residue helps lubricate the inside of a carburetor, but it can mess with electrical sensors like the TPS and such. Get throttle body cleaner and spray the parts down again. Also, buy MAF sensor cleaner and clean your MAF. Make sure you let the parts sit for 20-30 minutes to air dry, then reinstall. My Ranger has the same engine and cold start RPMs are only up near 1800 or so.
