[Solved] Honda Automatic Transmission Shudder

HI Scotty,

I have a  2010 Honda CRV with AWD and a 5 speed automatic. I live in Canada, and the vehicle drives all year round. I do all my own work if I can for the last 25 years. Last winter I moved from the coast to the interior. Before that the car was garage kept and had never seen freezing temperatures. Last winter I noticed a shudder developing around 40km/h in multiple gears, mostly under heavier throttle. I checked the u-joints on the rear drive shaft, the centre hanger, the CV axles, and all the mounts for the motor, transaxle, and rear differential (all 8 tires winter and summer are new, well balanced, and it isn't that kind of shudder) and they are all fine. I gave up on diagnosing the problem. By this spring it was getting worse. I drained and refilled the transmission, and reset the computer using a technique I found on youtube. I noticed the shift points changed, and so I think it worked. The shudder was still noticeable but was not as bad. Now that it is getting colder again I'm noticing the shudder getting worse, and occurring not only at 40km/h but now at 100km/h and above. I'm going to take it to the Honda dealer for diagnosis, but I'm looking for some advice prior to that, as they are not to be trusted (I took my recently purchased '95 Acura Legend in for an inspection the day after I changed the rear brake pads and they told me I needed new rear pads, amongst other things, some of them true). Do you know any common transmission problems related to this model of CRV? I'm wanting to have as much knowledge as I can before subjecting myself to a dealer, of which I think Honda is among the worst, as three different dealerships have attempted to screw me over by recommending unnecessary repairs and services and I won't trust them for even a second. Thanks for your help and I love your channel.

Ok, forgive me if I’m butting in. I own a same car, ‘10 CRV EXL. Mine has 180,000 km on it now. I’m in Calgary, … my car has been flawless, … other that tire temperature sensors throwing codes when it gets to -25C or lower. Oh, yes, my third gear pressure sensor sprung a leak - epoxy that seals the electrical wire cracked. That’s it

Anyway, … about your car: … provide me with a short synopsis of the service record: transmission oil changes, previous transmission issues, etc. Any transmission codes in the past? Stuff like that. Any other drive train issues in the past? Any shunts, …

Also, note that there were two transmission software reload recalls, plus transmission oil spec change - grade upgrade. Have those been implemented?

Best,

F.S.

The car has 185,000, I got it at 105, from a Nissan dealer, who provided a three page list of maintenance items they had addressed and a carfax report. I was unable to find proof of service but the carfax indicated no ownership changes or any anomalies (such as any periods where it was not insured, maybe indicating an accident without a claim) it was super straight, super clean, had a nice indent in the sun visor from a garage opener, and a CD of sea shanty songs, so I'm guessing it was a responsible older person. I've kept up with the maintenance minder and the only issues I've had to take it to the dealer for have been the Takata recalls and the A/C clutch after it failed, which was still barely under (3 months away from expiration) the extended warranty for that item. I was hit broadside in the passenger rear door by a VW Golf at alley speeds, but it still knocked me sideways. It aligned perfectly and did not shake until almost two years later. I hit a dear this summer going about 60, and just snapped the bumper back in place by whacking it with my hands, but it shuddered well before that. I haven't had to replace anything except the rear strut cartridges and brake pads. It has been a very reliable vehicle. I just can't live with this shudder, but am 99 percent certain I can't trust the dealer after that experience with my other car. But I'll have them check the transmission codes and reset if necessary.

Yes go to Honda and see if there aren't any software issues that can be reprogrammed by Honda start right there

@scottykilmer
