Hello Scotty (:

My Honda Civic 2009 has no codes but my spark plugs are covered in black carbon. I do notice that my car is not doing 34 miles /g on the highway ): I know my car is running rich and i don't know why. i have a scanner with live data, a DMM, TEST LIGHT, fuel gauge, compression tester, ALL DATA, MITCHELL ON DEMAND access. ): I have replaced the spark plugs, adjusted the valves to spec, replaced the air filter, both ECT Sensors, cleaned the Maf and O2 sensors, have done a fuel induction service, cleaned the EGR Valve, and throttle body and have maintained it very well ): Can you please help me? I was going to ECC San Diego and finished taking brakes and suspension class but in the beginning of electricity class covid began and class ended. Now I cant finish my classes until covid ends ):

Hope your class gets started back soon.  I'd replace the upstream O2, not just clean it (oem grade).  LTFT value?

@hillbilly
ok I warmed up the car and the ltft was -7.8 ):

Not awful but not great. I'd put a new oem grade upstream O2 sensor in it. And if ya get a chance, send me some maf values at hwy speed along with rpm (say 55 at a steady speed rpm on flat ground). I'll do some math and see if the maf is measuring correctly.

@hillbilly
I did what you told me (:
with the cruise control going a steady 55mph i go 1.7-2.1 V on my maf and with the A/C on i was getting about 1.9-2.1 V (: Flat ground

RPM?

@hillbilly
Sorry, 1750 (:

Ok, I'll figure out some info/values... it may be tomorrow as my daughter just drove in and my son is otw to visit with her/us too, sry.

@hillbilly
ok, I have seen that when i am looking at the short term fuel trim , it regularizes as i step on the acceletaros. maybe it is a air leak somewhere?

Look at LTFT to determine vac leaks, a value of 0 plus/minus 4 is very good. The action of STFT as you've described is normal if I'm understanding you correctly (it should oscillate between .1ish to .9ish volts after warm up and steady state on accelerator. but will go to max while accel depressed).
And your rich as it's taking fuel away (-7.8 LTFT), a positive direction would indicate a vac leak. I really think and upstream O2 is gonna fix it for you but wanna check maf. If $$$ isn't too much of an issue, replace maf and O2, 95%+ sure that will fix it.

@hillbilly
ok (: I will test them, I watch a lot of Ratches and wrenches on youtube. not sure if you know him, but he shows you how to test both maf and oxy sensor (: if they both pass should i still replace?

They are tricky to test...response time is important and I've tested a lot of O2's that test good (although not testing response time) but new O2 fixes it up (that carbon build up didn't do it any good re: response time). I'd replace the O2 for sure. MAF can be tested figured out a little more reliably but you got to get good info. You can research good MAF values on your car if you like as that would help... but be warned, stuff online isn't always accurate : /

@hillbilly
I checked the rediness codes and where it says EVAP it says incomplete, the rest pass

Uh, ok... sry if you've misunderstood me on something, or are you just letting me know for some reason all your emissions tests are completed except your evap?

@hillbilly
Yes, all my emission tests passed except EVAP, its says incomplete ): . Do you think this could be the issue?

No, just means the test hasn't been completed because conditions for it complete have not been achieved.

@hillbilly
I hooked up my manifold vacuum gauge and the motor looks normal, but the needle is vibrating at 20 inches of mercury. is that normal? the vibration is barely noticeable like less than 1 millimeter, the needle is going side to side but from one side to the other its only 1 millimeter distance. (:

Ok, you've lost me here... sounds like your just checking the manifold vacuum at idle. That vacuum level is fine and a little vibration is normal and more indicative of mechanical vibrations getting transferred to the gage rather that vacuum changes.
Should have your maf values in a bit, to save me some work, you got the 1.8 or 2.0?

@hillbilly
wow im so sorry i got the 1.8 l

@hillbilly
For some reason my Foxwell NT501 Elite wont tell me the voltage of my upstream o2 sensor )= do you know how I can back probe it?

2 wires are heater. 1 ground and 1 signal. After closed loop, the signal should be varying 0-1 volt (appx). I don't see my maf answer... the maf appears to be in range but too much variance (driving conditions...cruise control?).
I'd replace that O2 and maf. Check cat while O2 out.

Class is in session....

"I know my car is running rich and i don't know why"....explain how you know that ?

Are you basing that on the fact the plug tips are carbon covered ?

@heyinway
yes, i replaced them one month ago. also, my car is suppose to give me 25mpg on the city and 34 on the highway. But im getting like 20mpg on the city or less lol

@heyinway
dont like online

Hillbilly I replaced the Air Fuel Sensor aka precat oxygen sensor with a OEM Sensor but the -3 LTFT is still there? Any suggestions?
