Honda R18 High Mileage Oil

Hi all,

I have a Honda FR-V (has an R18 engine like the Civics) with 410 000km (255K miles for my American readers) and its burning a bit of oil due to worn piston rings. Should I continue to use 5w30 fully synthetic oil or go for high mileage oil or go for a thicker fully synthetic oil? I get conflicting info when researching online.

Thanks for answering!

Use the weight of oil recommended by the manufacturer. You didn't state the age of your Honda but since variable valve timing has been with us for over 20 years it probably has that, and you don't want to use heavy oil with that setup.

The only real difference in high-mileage oil is seal conditioners which purport to help older seals but most likely do not. Such oils won't do anything to reduce oil burning.

About all you can do to alleviate losing oil is check for leaks and change the PCV valve. You can do a wet vs. dry compression test to check condition of piston rings.
