What do you think about mazdas in general? Are the better then they used to be?

They are definetly better than they used to be. They went from using Jatco transmission and Ford engines to making their own Skyactiv designs to parterning with Toyota. Probably the brand that is improving the most when it comes to quality.
In my opinion they were on par or just below Subaru 15 years ago but now they have definetly passed them. The best designs are the naturally aspirated 4 bangers paired to the Skyactiv 6 speed auto (manual always better).

For longevity, just avoid the engines with cylinder deactivation.

Yes the current ones are better than the older ones. Still not on par with Honda/Toyota, but much improved.
