I could go through the phone book but is there anything I should look for or test them with to determine their reliability? Any questions I can ask them before I go in to see if they have all the equipment (like your computer scanners) or something? What do you think of bigger car shop places like Christian Brothers? Mainly looking to get a vehicle examined before I buy it.

Start by looking up reviews of local shops and read through a few of them. After you read reviews, do some background research on the shop - how long have they been in business? What sorts of services do they offer? What kinds of cars do they normally work on? Once you narrow it down to a couple shops that seem good, pick one of them and take your car there for something simple (like an oil change) and see how you like it and what feel you get from the shop.
I would recommend that once you find a good shop, stick with it! Don’t try to keep pricing around to see who will give you the absolute cheapest price. If a shop does quality and honest work, it is well worth it even if it’s a little more expensive that some chain store
