How much does a key cost, survey and curiosity

Hi there,

First time poster, long time viewer of the channel.

I have a 2009 Honda Jazz (known as City in other countries) (RHD, auto) and recently had to obtain two new keys as my taped together hack of two broken keys, is about to completely disintegrate. I decided (maybe stupidly) to go to the dealer to order the keys and have the keys cut for the car locks. I am absolutely gob smacked at the cost of two keys ($700+ Australian dollars, ca. $520 USD at the time of writing). This fee does not include programming the car ECU/immobiliser. That is extra ($200 AUD++).

I am curious to know how much keys cost in your respective locations. I feel as if I have been mugged. The original keys are of poor quality and very susceptible to damage in normal use.

It would be useful to get some data on the cost of Honda (and other manufacturers') replacement keys.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

At places like walmart or home depot a chipped key runs around $70 cut. Almost positive they can program keys, they wanted to on my key because for some reason the previous owner swapped in chipped keys/locks although the truck doesn't have that ability.

On my prior truck (99 F150) the locksmith wanted $150 to make a single copy, I'll never pay that much for a key. $5 is too much in my eyes😄

Don't go to the dealer for things like that from now on, find a reliable, bonded and insured automotive locksmith and go there.

I live near Dayton, Ohio and needed a new spare key made for my 1999 Ford Ranger a couple years ago. I called my dealer I bought my 2017 Mustang from and have ordered other parts at a discount through them over the years. They said being a reliable returning customer and it's an old part, they can get me a key for $30 instead of MSRP of $60, and they'll charge around $100 to program it, since it's a transponder key.

Sounded good, but that's not what they did. They charged the full MSRP and full labor to program it. It took two separate visits, because they didn't have the old programmer they needed anymore and a retired employee had to bring his in. When all was said and done it cost close to $200 for that key. Never again.

For modern car keys with transponders and all the electronic stuff, $150-$300 third party after market. Just what I have seen around. Dealer is like 2-4x that price.
