Humming noise after long trip?

1997 Ford Taurus SHO Automatic with 209000 miles. My Taurus has been making a low whining/whirring noise at low rpm that gets higher pitched at higher rpms after a long trip (70+ miles). I tried listening to it outside of the vehicle but I can only hear it inside the cabin. What could this be?

In my experience, whining sounds have two most likely sources. The power steering pump of the front pump on the transmission. Check the condition of the fluids in both units. If they are dark, smell burnt, or have debris in them this may be the source of the whine.

I hope this is helpful.
