[Solved] Injection cleaner used, now Loss of power, irregular acceleration.

G'day all,

I have a Mitsubishi express 2007 2.4L EFI van. It has 216,000km's (134,200 miles) on the clock. I was getting 12-13 litres per 100km's (2.8 gallons per 62.1 miles ). Factory specs indicate it is meant to do 10.5 per 100km's (2.3 gallons per 62.1 miles)

I put some Cheap injector cleaner in the tank at 1/3 and filled up. Now my engine is running irregularly with poor acceleration, surges and some rough idling.

I spoke to my local mechanic and he said I should not have used the injection cleaner. He said "Run the tank empty and fill her up and she should be good". I took his advice and this has not happened. I ran the tank empty, filled up with 95 octane and it still running with surges and a little rough idling.

Should I drain the tank again and put some high quality injection cleaner such Lucas Fuel Treatment or Liqui-Moly Fuel System Cleaner And Conditioner or should I get the car inspected by another mechanic and possible have a off car clean, This is the direction my hunch tells me to go but any advice would be very welcome.

Kindest regards Paul.

P.s Thankyou Scotty and Co.

Turned out to be Leaking Valve Cover Gaskets, Failing O-Ring Seals. Oil  was found covering the spark plugs. Pure coincidence that it happened just I had used  the injection cleaner.

New spark plugs and leads, Valve cover seal gaskets and O-Ring Seals. Lucky I stopped driving it pretty soon after the problem arose and waited for the inspection.

Thankyou all for your advice.

Salutations Paul.

I would take the car to another mechanic and have him check the live date. If you have a scan tool, you can also check the data yourself. Odds are that you have lean conditions. Check the fuel line pressure as well.

Thank you Yaser. I don't have those tools. I will take it to another mechanic. Much appreciated. 👍

Kindest regards PK.

I would stop pouring things into it and diagnose the problem. Starting with a fuel pressure check

Thankyou Mountainmanjoe, I booked a inspection with a Mechanic for 7-8am on Thursday.

I took Yaser's advice and booked the mechanic asap.

Salutations. PK
