Subaru Impreza 2009 2.0l with 200.000km. Sometimes when driving the car the engine revs very high but little power to the wheels. The brake gets pretty stiff and sometimes the steering wheel shakes a bit. When this happends it looks like there are heat waves comming from the hood and sometimes a little smoke and when I shut off the engine I can hear the engine ticking a little bit when the engine cools down. There is no temperature gauge in the car so I can't tell if the engine is overheating or not. Any idea what is wrong?

Manual transmission or automatic? That description makes it sound like something is slipping badly.
I can hear the engine ticking a little bit when the engine cools down.
That's common on Subarus. As the heat shields on the exhaust system cool down they can make ticking and crackling noises. Not a problem in and of itself.

The only car I've ever seen that from the factory had no temperature gauge and not even an overheating warning light was the Nash Metropolitan (1954-1962). I highly doubt a 2009 Subaru does not have anything to indicate overheating. Are you saying your temperature gauge is not working?
It is automatic. There is no gauge but there is probably a warning light in the dashboard. But it was not on.
If your engine is revving up but the car is not moving as expected either your transmission is shot (or very low on fluid), or your brakes are locked up.
