I currently have a junker 2010 Chevy hhr that I bought a few years ago for $1,000 and at 280,000 miles the transmission is now failing. Due to the current used car market being terrible, is it worth it to pay the current inflated price for an older Honda Civic or should I look for a cheaper vehicle?

They can be very good vehicles. Just make sure to have a mechanic inspect it.
