[Solved] Is the mechanic right about the Carvana car being previously wrecked ?

Hi Scotty

I paid a deposit for a 2017 Camry (clean Carfax) from Carvana (can return it within 7 days). I took it to an independent mechanic and within 5 minutes he said the car had most probably been in an accident by inspecting the underside and paint near the tires. To confirm this, he said he needed more time to fully inspect it and but said its not worth buying such a car. The car rides well on local roads as well as freeway. Should I end up buying or returning the car ?? Carvana customer care feigns ignorance and says I can return the car if I do not like it.

Well although the car is driving fine, I personally wouldn't buy a car that was involved in any sort of wreck. A car like that has tons of sensitive electronics on-board, and any wreck could've potentially damaged those electronics. Not just electronics, but mechanical components too could've gotten damaged from the wreck.

The number one mistake I see people make is putting 100% faith in CarFax, or ANY other car history report.

Accidents that are not filed through insurance are not on the vehicle history. Think about it: you drive into a ditch, then pay the body shop cash to repair it. How will that be traceable to anyone?

This is why getting an independent mechanic to inspect a car prior to purchase is so important. We know what to look for and have the equipment to do it properly. At least they let you give the car back. Had you purchased from a normal dealership you would be stuck. And don't think those dealers are any better. Every one of them are guilty of selling a car that has been in an accident at some point. The only question is whether or not they knew it when they sold it. Sad part is, most do.

exactly. Carfax is not a magic bullet, nor a substitute for a proper inspection.

That is why I do not use CARFAX.

return it if you can't get like a %20 %30 discount, which most likely won't happen.

Plus they generally charge too much for Camry's I would look private party, or another carvana add because of the 7 day return. You did the right thing bringing it to a mechanic.
