I just recently bought a 2011 Scion tc with a 6 speed automatic transmission as my daily car, but recently I've started a new job that requires a long commute.
I drive roughly 90 mins to work where at least an hour of it is on the highway where the speed limit is 75 MPH. It's been about 3 weeks of this kind of commuting and I have not run into any trouble. What I'm wondering is if I will have to do any extra maintenance like extra oil changes with the miles I'm racking up or do some preventative maintenance with me driving my car down the highways as often as I do going at this kind of speed.
I'm planning to take my car to a mechanic when I can find a good one to get it looked at to make sure nothing needs to be addressed.
For a lot of highway driving, I’d check all your cold tyre pressures every week, as you don’t want to be stranded due to a blowout. It’ll also ensure your gas mileage is the best you can achieve.
Don’t forget to check your spare tyre too (inflate it higher than the rest by about 4-5psi if you’re too lazy to check it regularly).
Consider investing in a good set of jumper cables/portable jump starter to make you that much more independent, on the highway.
I would just follow your manual. Because you will be driving a lot then of course you will be hitting those service intervals more often. Make sure you are esp. on top of your engine and transmission fluid change intervals.
You poor guy. You're driving for 3 hrs a day so you can work for 8?
Pressure wash all the bugs and debris out of the radiator once in a while. Keep your tires inflated and in good shape. Carry a good emergency kit and inspect it once in a while.
Yep, its a start on my path to becoming a electrical journeyman. Gotta drive far out for a solar farm.
I guess I would have to eventually buy some new tires considering the tread is getting a bit low but the car turns and drives good on them.
