Hello sorry this is my second question today 🙂

My inlaw wants to get an antique car, and has his eyes on a 2001 jaguar XJS it has 140k, the seller says its been sitting for a while, it idles smooth, exhaust kinda smells like it burns oil(maybe it's casue its been sitting for a while, not sure)

He is asking 3k, the seller also has a new Tacoma which is also an additional reason he wants to sell this off "he claims"

Are they any know issues with this car, year and model?

And what should he check on the vehicle.

Also it will have to be towed to a mechanic for all the fluids to be changed

Thank you in advance for taking the time to advise regarding this.

If the term "endless money pit" were to be found in the dictionary a picture of a Jaguar would be next to it, and this one is over 20 years old.

I guess if it's a weekend toy it could be OK if your in-law is willing and able to pour the requisite amount of cash into it for maintenance and repairs. As a daily driver - fugget about it.

I would not get it unless he plans on doing all the work himself (and on that note is already familiar with the vehicle and its issues), knows where to source parts, and has a dealer level scan tool.  Otherwise, even for a weekend vehicle, repairs can quickly outpace the value of the vehicle.

Thank you @DayWalker, @chuck Tobias and @MountainManJoe

Yall are great moderators and have saved me and my family from alot of horrible car mistakes maintenance and buys.
Many thanks
