Jeep ignition cylinder

Hello,

I have found out recently that my keys are missing for my 1997 Jeep Cherokee xj; I haven’t found them yet but I have decided to replace the ignition cylinder with a new one which comes with new keys, since I lost my keys I can’t turn the ignition to unlock the cylinder in order to remove it easily and properly. How would I be able to remove my current ignition cylinder so I can replace it with a new one? Any tips will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Frank

Before you do that, how much is the dealer quoting you for a new key? Or a good locksmith?

Unfortunately, according to the shop manual the key must be in the key cylinder for cylinder removal. You can inquire on a Jeep forum to see if there is some trick way around this, but you're probably going to need a locksmith.

Not sure about this specific model but its usually pretty easy. If it's not one that wraps around the steering column. Just take the plastic apart and look at how it goes together.

If it wraps around the steering column you will probably have to drill out the 2 bolts holding the clamp over the top. Sometimes you have to take the dash shroud or the whole dash out.
