What is a better car? 2013 Lexus rx 350 with 100k miles or 2015 Toyota rav 4 with 50k miles, looking for a car for to last 10 years
Well, most people drive 10-15k miles a year. The RAV is pretty darn likely to make it to 200K if you take care of it, and it's simpler (4 vs 6).
But the Lexus is faster, bigger, cushier.
If you want to drive with no trade-offs or compromises, you're going to have to buy 5-10 different cars, each optimized to a different requirement.
You're really not looking for a car to last 10 years. Realize that first.
You are actually looking for them to last 18 years and 16 years, respectively. That's a lot longer timeframe.
If you maintain either one of those, they could go a long time. But a lot is going to depend on how much you drive and in what conditions, as well as your general location (rust concerns, etc.).
Neither one is going to make that trek problem-free, and no car that is already 6-8 years old is going to. So you have to temper your expectations of reliability with the reality that repairs will be needed as they age.
Is the asking price similar? Those are both excellent cars that will easily last 10 years. If you plan to put on a ton of miles, I would say get the RAV4 - regular running costs will be cheaper on it and it’s got half the mileage that the Lexus does. If you are just going to drive a normal amount and want something more comfortable and luxurious, then get the Lexus. Maintenance will cost a little more, but you will get a much nicer interior and better ride quality.
Hey, thanks for the reply, the asking price is the same and the car is a preset for my wife, we drive around 4000 miles a year, those are city miles only, there is no rust where I live, I'm concerned with the running cost and the reliability of those cars down the road
With only 4K miles per year, you should have great reliability with either one of those. With the Lexus, things like spark plugs, transmission fluid change, coolant change, and maybe brakes are likely coming up. But if you want a nice luxurious SUV, the RX is a solid choice.
