Looking for a new EV that is built in North America, and I was wondering what would be more reliable?
1: VW ID4 rwd, 2: Tesla Model 3 rwd, 3: Ford Mach-E base rwd, 4: Bolt EUV
I want a car that wont break down during the first 5 years of ownership or be in the shop often for repairs
Thank You -David
The Bolt has the longest history, so there may be data to support your decision. At the same time it is a GM product.
The Mach-E looks great on paper, but it seems to have problems with coolant and the battery pack. Not sure if they fixed the problem or not.
The Model 3 has good internals, but the fit and finish of a Tesla is horrible. Horrible. You could be potentially in and out of the shop just to fix the fit and finish, not the mechanical.
And the ID4 may have the best fit and finish and a decent EV drive train. It’s so new, it’s hard to tell the reliability. With that said, it is probably a mass produced platform to watch moving forward.
All of them are relatively new and already had issues. I wouldn’t buy any of them. GM and Tesla EVs may have been around longer but GM is not known for their reliability in general especially when it comes to their electronics and Tesla has had quality issues left and right and consistently ranks in the bottom on various reliability surveys.
If you must have an electrified car, I would take a look at the new Toyota Prius. The styling is also better.

Seeing as how all of them either have known problems or are new and unproven I would not count on any of them not breaking down in the first 5 years.
