Loud engine noise when cold

Hey Scotty and friends,

I have a 2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i CVT with 60k miles. Whenever it’s cold outside and the engine isn’t warmed up, it makes a loud, droney whining noise under acceleration. The noise is completely gone once it’s warmed up. I’ve changed my oil regularly and the transmission seems to be working just fine. Is this normal or is something wrong? It’s been doing this since I bought the car with about 50k.

have your tried going under the hood to listen where it's coming from?

Does it make this noise when you rev the engine while in Neutral?

I haven’t tried that but I will say it’s pretty loud at idle when cold but quiets down significantly once warmed up

. Subarus with 60K miles shouldn't be making noise that bothers you in the passenger compartment. You can get what's called a mechanics stethoscope for around $10, and with that you could narrow down what the source is
