[Solved] Manual transmission issues

Topic starter

2016 Mazda Mazda3 itouring 6 speed manual.
Hi, I recently joined the U.S. navy, my father had driven the car to see me, from texas to Chicago, while on his way back, the accelerator stopped working, he took the car out of gear and when he tried to go back in gear, it was not feasible. He explained that when you move around the shift knob, no gears are present. The shifter has full range of motion. The car has never had any previous issues of any kind, I’ve had it for over a year and a half. The car has 65,000 miles on it. We originally thought maybe a problem with the linkage system but we’re afraid it’s something inside the transmission. Any ideas, comments, or help if any kind would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

From the symptoms you describe, it sounds like the main shift fork in the trans broke.  If the lever has full range of motion as you described but it will not select a gear, the shift fork(s) have failed.  You will need to open up the trans to fix this.  Since it's a manual, it may not be too bad if all the seals and synchros are still good.  It could also be that the base of the shift lever itself has come out of its bushing.
