Hi Scotty, I wanted to buy a Mazda 6 turbo it’s zippy and looks good, but they’re all out of stock and discontinued the model this year. I hear they’re coming out with a new inline 6 later this year.
Is it a good idea to buy this 1st gen model or better to just find a different later gen model of another brand?
my current car is a 1997 Taurus with 130k it still works pretty good so I can wait till end of year if I need to. Thank you!

No, it is not.
This current market is insane right now. Buying a 1st gen model will go for more than what it's originally asking for. Pass.
Best to wait as you never know what new problems could arise with a new model.
Honesty that Taurus you have is a God Send!!! Run that baby into the ground until the market settles even if you have to put a few bucks in it. Right now repair shops are loaded up with repairs as people want to hold off on getting ripped off from dealers.
The first and second generation Mazda6 is a Ford Fusion - during that time, Mazda was owned by Ford during that time period.
The outgoing generation has been built for almost a decade - it’s already a very proven platform.
Personally I’d avoid the turbo engine and get the proven naturally aspirated 2.5L. It’s still very quick, and it’ll probably be much more reliable.
As far the upcoming generation - I’d wait for 3-4 years to see how reliable is it going to be. Mazda had some questionable launches recently like the CX-3 handling terrible and being a flop, and issues with the Mazda3 launch (AC and suspension).
