Metal shavings in oil - Keep or sell car?

Topic starter

2010 Toyota Yaris 111k miles. I just changed the oil (with full synthetic high mileage) tonight and saw some metal shavings. I read on other posts that this is a bad sign. What can be done to keep the car running because I still owe $6500? Or would it be better to get rid of it and get something much newer?

On the total  quantity of oil you let off (you should not have discarded it yet):

how many shavings?

2, 30, a hand full??

put a magnet in your oil and see how much gets attracted to it.

Is youe oil-plug not a magnetic one?

shavings=wear (not good), but the 'amount of' is a clue.

I poured the used oil into the 5qt bottle I partially used so I will use a magnet and do that. One noticable small pebble and few sand-like metal shavings when pouring last few drops into bottle. My drain is not magnetic.

I should have taken a photo first before pouring the oil into the partially used 5qt bottle. I will try to use a magnet to isolate the shavings in the bottle. Only one noticable small pebble and a bit sand like shavings when I poured the last drips from the oil pan into the bottle.
