Hey Scotty,

my wife is interesting in buying a mini Cooper what is your thoughts about buying one? All the research that I have read it seems like they’re not too reliable cars and could be expensive when the break down because they are actually BMW parts am I wrong?
thank you sir

Save your money.

This is a true story and holds true to every MINI I've worked on. As a testament to their build "quality", pop the hood on a MINI. Then, with one hand only, grip the front grille and pull.

I guarantee you it comes off in your hand. Maybe don't do that at a dealer as they won't like it, but at least wiggle on it. You'll see how cheaply it is put together. The rest of the car is no better.

They are quite horrible vehicles and they fall apart way before their time. Also like you said they use BMW parts which are very expensive and complex. If you have to get one you could lease one so if it breaks it is not your problem.

They are basically money pits I remember Scotty saying they are basically BMWs and cost lots of money to fix them but "they aren't absolute piles of junk I mean its nothing like Fiat 500 its much better than those haha if you get one cheap enough it could be decent enough because they have horrendous resale value"-Scotty

Lots of women like the Mini Cooper forget about get a Toyota/Scion/Lexus find something you like.

Two wrongs don't make a right. British AND German = Stay Away!

They are terrible cars, as are all cars from Britain.

Stay away. The engines are time bombs.

Regardless of the year, definitely pass on it!  If she really likes the car, then lease it but at the same time be prepared to visit the dealer numerous times during the lease.

Mini coopers are BMWs powered by Citroën engines. They’re not particularly well built and don’t last much over 90,000 miles.

All though they’re so cute and nice to drive – I wouldn’t recommend getting one.

only get one if it’s new, you don’t drive much, and you don’t mind the depreciation.

i mean if it’s a city car, that you’re going to use for a couple thousand miles a year, almost any car can do that well enough.

If you’re European, get a used Citroën DS3. It’s the same engine and a similar experience but cheap to buy used and wayyyy cheaper to run. A Volvo C30 is also a fine alternative to a good small car.
