Scotty, I hope this post finds you well! My name is Ben. I am one of your YouTube subscribers and big fan of your genuinely honest content. My question for you is, with a family of 5 we are in need of a bigger family vehicle... what is your recommendation for the most reliable SUV(s) on the market today? We are looking for something second-hand & we have been eyeing the Toyota 4Runners. I look forward to hearing back from you! Keep up the great work educating us all on the vehicles we drive!

For a truck like ride from an SUV: Toyota 4Runner.

For a car like ride from SUV: Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot.

For a car like ride in a compact/midsized SUV: Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV.

Honorable mentions: Mazda SUV's and Subaru SUV's.

I have a 23 year old 4Runner and I can say I’m very happy with the reliability and low cost maintenance. The only gripe is the low mpg. It guzzles gas. But that’s far better than it breaking down.

The 4runners are good, but they are expensive used for a decent one with low miles. You should look into used highlanders, you can get one fully loaded with 80k miles for under 20k that is like 5 years old.

For a family of 5, I would recommend the Toyota Highlander, also will ride more comfortable, more room, and better fuel economy than the 4runner.  You can test drive both Highlander vs. 4runner and see for yourself, but I’d go with the Highlander here.
