Scotty, my Fiance has a 2012 Honda Civic, the "check emissions system" light just came on. What can I do myself to treat this problem before going to a mechanic? When I drive it myself I can smell exhaust outside the car but nothing inside.
Also, I will soon be purchasing a 2005 Chevy Malibu from my parents. What are your thoughts on those cars?

Check for codes on the Civic. If you really want a Malibu one of these would be a better bet:

Start by scanning the Civic for codes.
Is the exhaust sounding unusually loud? If yes, check for exhaust leaks using smoke.
Also, politely pass on that Malibu..
