Are there any negatives to riding a battery until it has no life left and can't start your car? (Any negative effects on the car that is; ie: could it limit the life of your alternator?, obviously having to jump start your car can be lame, but I'm more curious on negative effects to the car.
I replaced the battery on my 99 honda crv because it failed a load test, but i was wondering if I could just ride it until it dies next time.
Modern cars have lots of computer modules on board that need the right voltage to operate. So besides making the alternator work harder (and reduce its lifespan) it can lead to a whole host of electrical problems (or gremlins). And of course you will eventually be stranded from the car not starting. It’s definitely not a good idea to drive with a weak battery or bad battery. In general, you want your entire charging system running fine (not just the battery), so make sure you check that from time to time.
it will kill your alternator. You will also be burning a bit more fuel.
