Thoughts on Hyundai Santa Cruz vs. Ford Maverick

Scotty, I know these models are fairly new so there is not much on reliability, however, I an wondering what small truck would you chose for hauling and pulling within specs, and why.

Hyandai Santa Cruz or Ford Maverick?

The models you mentioned are not good. Hyundai generally has issues with their engines and about Maverick only time will tell. If you like this segment, stick to Honda Ridgeline.

I agree with @yaser that the Ridgeline is the only one that I would trust.  It has all the unibody driving goodness you want but is still big enough to be trucky when you need it.

I suppose the Ridgeline is more midsize, whereas the others are more compact, so it’s not really a direct competitor.  But besides reliability, my concern with the Ford and the Hyundai is that their cargo area is so small that they aren’t really any more functional than a small SUV, which means they really should be cross shopped against things like the RAV4 and 4Runner (which would not be a very favorable comparison for them, reliabilitywise).

So you specifically mentioned hauling and pulling. I think that’s where these little trucks are likely to let you down.  They are really intended to be daily drivers and recreational vehicles, not work trucks.  I would be nervous putting either transmission under a load.

The Ridgeline might be a little more expensive than the others but that should be offset by fewer repairs down the road, especially if you intend to tow.  Plus, at least compared to the Mav, the availability is better.

Neither one.

Pass on both, they are more of a “lifestyle” vehicle.   I wouldn’t hold my breath on either of them being reliable for the long-term.  If you want a truck meant for work, look at something else.

The Nissan Frontier 2nd gen 4cyl/manual/2WD/king cab made until 2019(?) is an excellent little work truck. It has a timing chain where the V6's have a belt. Try to stay away from the automatics if you can...before 2010 they had a tranny oil cooler that was part of the radiator and there was leakage. It has a stout frame but a rough ride.

I have a 2013 that I've put 60K mi on and it does fine hauling wood, tools, and towing a small boat. Plenty of power for a 4-banger. One of the best things is I can stand next to the truck and reach most anything in the bed.

They're hard to find, so good luck.

Based on those two models you are asking about as other folks said go for the Ridgeline. Or if you are willing to consider something a bit different and an actual truck the Tacoma. But definitely neither of the two you asked about.

Out of those two, I would go for the American-made Hyundai over the Mexican-made Ford. And if you do get a Santa Cruz, make sure to get an SEL Premium for the turbo motor. I have not seen any problems YET with the Smartstream turbo motors. The Ford EcoBoost motors have been proven problematic. I know because my father rented a Fusion with the 1.5 EcoBoost and it was burning oil with less than 40,000 miles on it.
