[Solved] Italian tune up gone bad on my 2010 Honda Pilot!

Hey Scotty I have a 2010 Honda Pilot 4x2 with 3.5l v6, automatic trans, and 230,000 miles. I was on the interstate heading to and important meeting in another town and I was late. There wasn't a lot of traffic so I decided to gun it. After hitting 120mph my vehicle suddenly began to shake and lose power. My speed dropped to 60 mph and I was unable to go above 3500 rpm. The vehicle still runs but shakes violently when when idle or when you give it too much gas while driving. The vehicle showed misfire codes for cylinders 1&6 but changed to 1&4 when I switched out the coils. I changed the oil, sparkplugs, and cleared the codes but it still hasn't solved the problem. I've been told that it could possibly be in limp mode or have a bad catalytic converter. Plz help!

Well I dare you blew the engine those things aren't made for going 120 miles an hour.See that quite often when people overstep the boundaries of an old car.try to find a mechanic like me to analyze the engine but I could just about guarantee you blew the engine

Well Scotty I hate to say it but u were right. I ended up narrowing down the problem to cylinder 1. Compression test showed that it only had 30 psi of pressure.

Try changing your fuel filter (if it has one) & pressure test your fuel pump.

You said you cleared the code, have they showed up again?

Also, did you mean you swapped out only the #6 coil with #4? Or you swapped #1 too, but the misfire didn’t move?

Yeah Scotty may well be correct too, if the simple things don’t fix the misfire.

I switched 1 with 2 and 6 with 4. Yes I cleared them three times and they always return.

Pray the steps in the video isolates your misfires, or else..

well if the misfire moved with the coil, then maybe you just popped the coil.

Yeah I think that's the case for the cylinder 6 coil but cylinder 1 still had a miss even after I switched and changed the plugs.

I don't want to be that guy, but I have a feeling you popped the motor. 

 

You take an old motor, run it up to 230k miles, then nail it up to 120mph with no prep....yeah....popcorn. Whether it is a Honda or not, old high mileage engines don't like being hit over the head like that.

 

Get a compression test done, but expect the worst.


Gosh I hope not. I was still able to hit 80mph on my trip back. The engine seems to run well while driving at a constant speed. It shudders when its idle and when you try to accelerate, but if you gas a little to hard it stalls. Its kinda like the vehicle is jumping forwards.

If the engine is "blown" as some people believe, it would show up in a cylinder compression test.

What RPM’s were your running before it cut out, and what is your redline?


I was at about 5000 I think. Redline is around 6100.


Are you sure it isn't 6800-6900 rpms, Honda J35 engines are in that range.

No one mentioned the timing belt! I think, … I believe your timing belt may just skipped three or five, … or more teeth. Check that out. Symptoms you describe make me think that this just may be it? And now you have camshafts bit out of synch with crank, and with VVT activating on and off, sometimes engine runs just OK, … and sometimes sputters. I have seen this in other cars, … and I don’t see that Pilot would act differently under circumstances. Have it checked, …
