Do I have to disconnect the battery on my 1995 dodge ram 5.2 when replacing the O2 sensor?

You don't have to disconnect the battery on that old 5.2L Dodge pickup when replacing the Heated O2 Sensor.

There's no power going to the heater side of the sensor and the sensor side isn't generating any voltage in a cold engine that isn't running.

Not that you asked, but here's how your HO2S is wired.

I highlighted red for power, dark green for ground on the "heater side" of the sensor.

I highlighted pink for power (the 0 to 1 volt that's generated by the HO2S) and light green for ground (the clean ground provided by the PCM) ((sensor return)) on the "sensor side" of the HO2S.

Anyway, if replacing the HO2S doesn't fix your issue and you need help troubleshooting the heater and sensor circuits come back and let us know.

thank you

Does Scotty Kilmer ever respond to questions ?

He does that on a regular basis, but out of necessity he picks out several he'll respond to - there's no way Scotty can respond to them all personally.

Short answer - if you dont know, than always disconnect power before doing anything electrical. Its better to reset some software than to fry it.

It wouldn't hurt, and it only takes a minute.

It's good practice, and a good habit to get into any time working on electronicals.

It just prevents any unwanted incidents.

Does Scotty Kilmer ever respond to questions ? The o2 should be delivered tomorrow I hope this fixes the problem.

replaced th O2 today started up great ran great I went inside for a drink came back out the truck stalled out , got it running again kept rpms high around 2.5 let off the gas stalled again . the crazy part the mechanic when replacing the engine put the ground wires anywhere the one from the back fire wall to a mounting bolt that holds the alternator near the dip stick . the ground wire smoked with the new O2 WTF ???so i cleaned the old o2 unclogged the holes put it back in and same problem backfire through throttle body ... I am clueless now ... I also replaced the map sensor after the O2 failure but was not able to test it the battery went dead it's on a charge now ... HELP PLEASE

update replaced O2 back to new one now idle steady but when i step easy on gas pedal when about to switch gears from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th backfire between 20 to 40 mph but if i step on the gas hard no backfire runs through gears fine
