How do I read the oil dipstick

I have a 2007 Lincoln Town Car with 150k miles. I check the oil in my garage every week or so after it sits overnight and it is sitting level. When I check the dipstick it looks like the oil is running up the dipstick really high but not a full amount; almost like it is scraping the oil in the dipstick when I pull it up. It makes it very hard to read. I doubt that it is that overfilled but I am curious if this is a common thing?

Sometimes I’ve had to look at the backside of the dipstick to get a good reading of where the oil is.

Sorry, but I have to ask the basic questions.:

  • Are you checking the oil with the car shut off and letting it sit for a little while first?
  • Are you wiping the stick clean, and then inserting it to check the level?

Sometimes it helps to check the BACK of the stick. The correct level is where the stick is wet all the way around.

Next time post a photo and maybe we can help out.
