My beloved 2006 VW Beetle Convertible (i am original owner) with 159,400 miles doesn’t have a regular oil filter.  it has an oil filter element.   I want to start changing my own oil, and i’m wondering if there is a way to convert that filter element oil filter to a regular oil filter.

I wouldn't waste time and money trying to convert the oil filter set-up. You can very easily do your own oil changes with a cartridge oil filter set-up. You just need to buy the specific removal tool/socket for your vehicle. Remove the cover, pop out the old filter, replace o-rings if applicable, pop in the new filter, and screw the cover back on.

There are many conversion kits but if you don't want to spend much money than you can just get the tool that you need for the filter element.
