Is a cheap oil filter as good as an expensive one?

Dear Fellow Motorists:

I have a 2010 KIA with 110,000 km. or 70,000 miles. Up.to know I had the dealer do all the engine oil changes. However money is tight so I want to change the oil and filter myself. I will use the best engine oil. However, is it OK to buy a cheap oil filter? Will a $4 one do the same job as a more expensive one. Do U recommend a parficular brand?

Thank You in advance for your help

An oil filter is not something to cheap out on. Purolator oil filters are decent and not too expensive, though I usually use Mann or NAPA Gold (Wix) filters.

@chucktobias I use WIX XP all the way

You can buy OEM filter for $8 on Amazon.  Also, shop for oil on either Amazon or Walmart.  You'll get the best prices at these places.

Idk if rockauto ships to where you’re at, but they have good deals on quality oil filters. If you drive less than 3000 miles a year I’d say it’d be fine to use a cheap oil filter, provided you change your oil annually, but only when money’s really tight. I would still use a quality filter regardless.

Here’s a video Scotty did where he cut open a budget and a premium oil filter and compared them: https://youtu.be/EXFh1gfEWCw?si=MjzDXVQULrXptkcz

And here’s another one I watched recently that I found interesting. https://youtu.be/mGy_jewqMk0?si=FOCLCtzOZPtlbjq6
