What could be the cause of oil leaking from what appears to be around the bottom of the oil pan?

It difficult to trace because not enough information, make, model, motor, mileage, but you could check valve cover gasket and lose oil pan bolts, snug to factory specks. Lot of places it could be seeping from.

Sorry for that. It’s a 2010 Ford Escape 3.0l, 155k miles

No problem 😉. But I would still check the things I suggested first. Also make sure it's motor oil. Not power steering fluid etc.
