Oil level goes down

Hello Scotty. I hope you're doing fine at your new place.

I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer ES with 197,000 miles. 2.0 I believe the engine is. It runs great. I have done a couple of things to keep in good shape but nothing major except a new rack and pinion when it reached 180,000 miles.

After that many miles, is it normal that the oil that comes out every time I change it is  3/4 of a qt less than what I put? and I change the oil every 3,000 miles. Should I change to synthetic?

Should I add some oil when the car has run 1,500 miles after an oil change?

Thanks

Some engines burn quite high quantites of oil when they age. It just means they wearing out.

You would have to rebuild the engine to get rid of that problem, which can cost a fortune if you can't do it yourself.

If you don't want to go through that hassle, you can try using a thicker oil and see if it solves the problem for a while.

It will sadly come back at some point.

Your engine is wearing out but it is typical in a car with high mileage. Rebuilding the engine is not recommended on that because of the cost.

Do not use heavier oil. Just stick to the recommended oil and top off the oil as needed and definitely change the oil every 3000 miles. I think you should be fine. Good luck.

I wouldn't be too concerned.  I had a 2011 Equinox that burned a quart every 700 miles.

Your car is burning oil which probably means your piston rings are getting slightly worn out from almost 200k miles. It isn´t burning that much so I  would just live with it and add some when the oil gets low. You might try using a slightly thicker oil. I would not switch to synthetic as sometimes that can make the problem worse.
